Standby readiness

A practical way to organise inspections, records and maintenance responsibilities.

Separate observation from maintenance

A readiness walk-through helps identify changes that need attention. It does not replace the manufacturer’s service schedule or the work of a qualified technician. Use the selected model’s manual to establish the required tasks and intervals.

Assign an owner for routine observations and another responsible contact for technical work.

Organise a simple inspection record

Record the date, running hours, visible condition and any controller messages. Note changes instead of simply repeating a tick mark.

AreaWhat to record for review
FuelLevel, replenishment arrangements and reported condition concerns
Starting systemBattery or charger alerts and visible issues
CoolingVisible leaks or obstructions
ControlsOperating mode and active warnings
Site accessVentilation, service access and changes around the installation

Perform observations only where access is safe and permitted. Follow isolation and operating procedures before any hands-on work.

Review testing as a planned activity

Agree the purpose of testing, who authorises it, which loads are involved and how the site returns to normal operation. Document results and actions. Testing requirements depend on the application, local rules and equipment instructions.

Do not treat an engine start as proof that the complete system will carry the required load.

Close the loop

Every fault report needs an owner, action and completion record. Revisit the plan when loads change, operating hours increase or site conditions differ. Keep manuals, service records, contact details and parts information accessible to the people who will respond during an outage.

Review your power requirement whenever the facility changes.

Sources & scope

General procurement guidance. Worked examples are illustrative; final selection requires the selected manufacturer's documentation and a project-specific engineering review.

Prepare the handover

Record commissioning, service responsibilities and spare-parts requirements in the enquiry.
